Wolfgang Rihm's death in the summer of 2024 not only caused consternation and deep sadness in the music world, it also left an immense void. The composer's almost incomprehensible productivity, his sensual yet intellectually sharp approach to all things aesthetic, and not least the sheer mental and physical presence of Rihm as a person: all of this is now missing. Far and wide, there are no figures in sight who could satisfy the longing for such forces.

As present as Rihm was in the cultural life of not only the Federal Republic of Germany for decades, it has now suddenly become quiet around him. The Heidelberg Spring Festival, with which Wolfgang Rihm was closely associated for decades—all his string quartets were performed here in January 2022—is now honoring the master with a day of celebration: ‚Ein Fest für Wolfgang Rihm‘ includes high-caliber performances of his works and pointed speeches. The audience and the composer's many companions are invited to meet and share their memories.

The third event of the festival for Wolfgang Rihm begins with a short introduction to the work before one of Rihm's most impressive mature works is performed: ‘Vigilia’ for six voices and ensemble from 2006. Seven Passion texts are sung a cappella, accompanied by instrumental interludes, until the sung and played parts finally unite.
