Love songs in contemporary music – yes, they do exist. The French composer Gérard Grisey (1946–1998) wrote some of the most moving ones. The spectralist, who composed “not with notes, but with tones,” who viewed sound as a living being and time as its atmosphere, reclaimed a metaphysical dimension in his musical work. This is also evident in his “Chants d’Amour” for twelve voices and tape (1984), impressively performed here by the Schola Heidelberg. At the heart of these songs, Grisey placed a reflection on the commonality between music and love: through both, humans discover and experience time. (Kairos)
