down into the unknown

Veranstalter: Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele
Unfortunately, this concert must also be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
2020 is a year of significant anniversaries. Nine months before Beethoven, on March 20, 1770, the poet Friedrich Hölderlin was born. The Heidelberg Schola’s program is dedicated to him. Only four of the texts set to music are his own; Nono’s and Ligeti’s compositions attest to their relevance beyond his lifetime. But it is as if all the other works illuminate his poetic horizon: the mirror-like and conflictual relationship between the inner and outer worlds, between humanity and nature; the layers of memory in human history as an aid to coping with the present; the interplay of meaning and sound, which is inherent in music and language in their own distinct ways; and the ideal that lies far beyond the reach of hope; but also the high artistic standing of his poetry, its constructive, emotionally charged commitment, which is reflected in the history of modernism.
