The opening of the 2025 Tyrol Easter Festival (for the second time with Klangforum Heidelberg) is set against a backdrop of old and new, grief, pain, and hope. The works range from the 16th to the 21st century, from Cipriano de Rore, Orlando di Lasso, and Domenico Scarlatti to Wolfgang Rihm and Salvatore Sciarrino.
The two main highlights are Domenico Scarlatti's Stabat Mater, which occupies a special place among his compositions due to its unique spatial structure and drama. It impulsively and sensually describes Mary's suffering beneath the cross. The Austrian premiere of Salvatore Sciarrino's Due Cori is also a unique experience. The Italian composer is one of the most important voices of the 20th and 21st centuries. In his latest piece, he examines Aeschylus' tragedy “Agamemnon” and describes the impermanence of human fate through Cassandra.
Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of St. Peter) from Lasso's year of death and Mit geschlossenem Mund (With Closed Mouth) in memory of Wolfgang Rihm, who died in 2024, are two masterpieces that complement each other beautifully. Lasso's music overflows with emotion and artistry, while Rihm engaged in a beautiful exploration of silence. The evening ends with an appeal for peace by Cipriano de Rore.
