The oldest surviving polyphonic work, Machaut’s "Messe de Notre Dame" is paired in this concert with the "Machaut Architectures" by the contemporary Spanish composer Sánchez-Verdú, who has composed interludes for the five parts of the Mass: The connection between old and new – the new within the old – is thus exemplified, and it becomes clear how the 14th-century Mass influences contemporary composition and the fascination it still exerts.
