Webern’s songs are understood here, contrary to the "mathematical" interpretation by the serialists, within the context of the Romantic performance tradition. The calculations in du Fay’s famous cathedral consecration motet "Nuper rosarum," newly arranged by Walter, refer to the architectural proportions of Florence Cathedral. A piano work by Cage, composed using principles of chance, stands in contrast to Schöllhorn’s realization of the typically Boulezian integration of arbitrary decisions into a serialist structure; finally, in Lang’s world premiere of Hermetica IV, the music seems to have composed itself entirely through cellular automata.
