In May 2019, KlangForum Heidelberg, along with the two ensembles SCHOLA HEIDELBERG and ensemble aisthesis, will accept an invitation from the ENSEMS Festival to perform in Valencia.
The reason for the invitation was the commissioned composition by the Italian composer Aureliano Cattaneo (who has lived in Spain for many years), which KlangForum had commissioned for its own festival "DIKTATUREN" in October 2017.
The work "Sasso nell’Oceano" premiered to great acclaim in Heidelberg on October 29, 2017. This commissioned composition addresses the (unfortunately) topical political issue of dictatorships. Cattaneo based the piece "Sasso nell’Oceano" on a text by Antonio Gramsci from his "Lettere dal carcere" (Prison Notebooks). Antonio Gramsci was the founder of the Italian Communist Party. He was an opponent of Benito Mussolini, who had already seized power as the fascist "Duce." In November 1926, he was arrested for high treason and remained in fascist custody until 1935. During these years, Gramsci wrote one of his greatest works, the "Prison Notebooks." These "Prison Notebooks" are described as "a major work of 20th-century political philosophy" [Wolfgang Fritz Haug]. Through his engagement with these texts, Cattaneo addresses the dictatorship in Italy in his work.
The program will be complemented by works primarily by Spanish composers, including Elena Mendoza, José María Sánchez-Verdú, and Stefano Gervasoni. Gervasoni himself will be in attendance at the festival in Valencia.
