This final work by composer Gérard Grisey is also one of his most significant. The four songs explore the theme of dying from the perspective of various civilizations and reflect on the inevitability of death. Grisey sets to music, for example, inscriptions from Egyptian sarcophagi or lines from ancient Greek poems. The piece concludes with a tender lullaby, which, according to Grisey, is “not intended to lull one to sleep, but to awaken a humanity finally freed from its nightmare.” Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
