7:00 p.m.: Introductory discussion with composers Helmut Lachenmann and York Höller.
No concert without space: in the program "Klangräume – Stadt" (Sound Spaces – City), the KlangForum Heidelberg confronts and positions compositions from various eras and styles that are characterized by a distinctive spatial differentiation of music.
This program brings together key works by two of the most significant living composers: "... quasi una Fantasia …," the miniature piano concerto by György Kurtág (b. 1926), and the "Concertini" (2005) by Helmut Lachenmann (*1935), harmoniously complemented by Guo Wenjing’s spatially ritualistic "Drama" (2003) for three percussionists and the world premiere of a tribute to Bernd Alois Zimmermann by his student York Höller (*1944), the first contribution in a series of commissioned compositions marking Zimmermann’s 100th birthday.
The instrumental ensembles in the compositions by Lachenmann, Kurtág, and Guo Wenjing consist of unusually arranged, soloistic subgroups—known in the Baroque and Classical periods as "Concertini" – surrounding the audience. Additional historical and spatial perspective is provided by the canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli, newly orchestrated by Andrew Digby specifically for the concert venues of the project – examples of early Venetian polyphonic choral music from around 1600, with which Helmut Lachenmann engaged intensively during his studies with Luigi Nono, among others.
The concert will take place behind the Julius-Springer-Schule | Elsa-Brandström-Straße, corner of Columbusstraße | Heidelberg-Südstadt
Please note that the concert venue is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
