The 1st Biennale for New Music of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, "Concrete Utopias," will take place in the summer of 2021 in the cities of Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Ludwigshafen.
The program features twelve world premieres, one premiere, and an accompanying program of lectures, workshops, a composition competition, and educational formats.
Composer Karola Obermüller says about her work:
"During my afternoon nap, I often dream up ‘solutions’ to compositional problems that are on my mind. In this sense, I imagined that Ernst Bloch dreams of verbs – specifically, some of the central verbs of his philosophical work. And as is often the case in dreams, the verbs take on a life of their own; they breathe, resonate, and sing..."
The verbs were taken from several Bloch quotations and arranged in a specific order for the composition "Bloch träumt."
