The 1st Biennial for New Music of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, "Concrete Utopias," will take place in the summer of 2021 in the cities of Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Ludwigshafen.
The full program features twelve world premieres, one premiere, and an accompanying program of lectures, workshops, a composition competition, and educational events.
"In Bloch laden, I approach the philosopher with the help of means once ostracized as musically incapable," says Robin Hoffmann about his piece.
The title of the piece, Bloch laden, means, on the one hand, "charged with Bloch." The composition is driven by a Bloch battery. His texts – which already have a distinct musical quality – form the energy source of the piece through spoken, sung, or instrumental-musical transformations. On the other hand, "Bloch laden" also means "loaded with Bloch," "to take him on one’s back." Reading Bloch requires a considerable effort of translation. Much of what he writes is no longer tenable today, and yet it remains true.
