The personal relationship between German composer Dieter Schnebel (1930–2018) and writer Marie Luise Kaschnitz (1901–1974) provides the basis for a literary and musical double portrait of two significant figures.
The program includes, among other works, Schnebel’s twenty-minute song cycle "Kaschnitz-Gedichte," which he composed in 1994 in memory of his mother-in-law, Kaschnitz. In addition, a highly topical setting of Kaschnitz’s poetry will be performed in the form of a commissioned composition by the young Korean composer Eun-Ji Anna Lee – a student of Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe, among others. Dieter Schnebel’s legendary seminal work in the field of speech-music, "Glossolalie" – originally conceived as a project in 1959 – will be presented by singers/speakers and instrumentalists of the ensemble aisthesis in the 1961 version.
Before the concert, Giessen-based Germanist Joachim Jacob will provide an introduction to the literary and biographical context of the event. Lena Sutor-Wernich will read selected prose texts by Marie Luise Kaschnitz, a native of Karlsruhe.
